Thank You Sponsors, Guests, and Volunteers For A Successful 2011 Habitat Mardi Gras Dinner & Dance Fund Raiser

Posted 3-18-11

This year's Habitat for Humanity of Wausau's Mardi Gras was held at the Rothschild Pavilion on Feb. 26th, 2011. Over 400 guests came through the doors and were greeted by the popular New Orleans Hurricane drink. The attendees then proceeded into the dinning area where they were served for two hours by some of Wausau's premier restaurants such as Back When Cafe, The Wright Place and Michael's Supper Club. Sid Kyler and his band played for an hour and then the feature band Whoz Playing took the stage. The dance floor stayed filled with dancing all night. Gerald Mews, the renowned Make-Up Artist applied masks on guests that didn't want to wear one otherwise. Steve Ballard, the acclaimed caricaturist from Appleton drew guests' likeness while sitting at their tables. Both donated half of their proceeds back to Habitat for Humanity of Wausau.

WDEZ Lee Peek and Nikki Montgomery were there to emcee the evening activities. Brian Stolzman of the Brian West Show performed magic and held a live auction. An autographed Champion Season Green Bay Packers football was auctioned and brought in $600. Absolute Bliss Photography donated a $2500 wedding package that went to a guest from Ruder Ware placing the highest bid.

The present reigning president of Habitat for Humanity of Wausau, Dave Eisenreich, was presented by a check from First Weber. Cheryl Woods was the winner of the trip for two to New Orleans sponsored by Brainard Funeral Home.

Tom represented the Brainard Funeral Home and congratulated Woods after her win. Neil Torney who has overseen the restoration of the Pavilion and a guest at the event said, "We've had some beautiful weddings at the Pavilion and a lot of events, but if you were to combine them all this set the standard even a little higher."

"The success of the event was seen by the enthusiasm of the guests. I expect the event to double next year and become one of the most anticipated events of the year", stated the Mardi Gras Coordinator, Janet Lawrence of Distinctive Celebrations LLC. Lawrence attributed the success of the event to six months of planning by a very committed group of committee members who put their heart and soul into the event.

Plans Begin for 53rd Habitat Home

Posted 8-17-10

While the finishing touches are being completed on our final home for 2010, we begin to focus on our fifty-third home to be built in the Wausau area.

As reported earlier this year, we have suspended our high school building partnership for now, so the next house will probably be built on site. A stick-built home requires more volunteer hours, but we have experience in this building style because three of our four Thrivent Builds homes were constructed in this manner.

Right now we have several tasks to complete related to this home. First, we must choose a recipient family who presently resides in substandard housing but has the financial ability to pay the property taxes and the monthly, zero interest mortgage payments.

Once the 53rd family is located, we can begin the process of designing a home that best meets their needs. At that time, we also need to find a suitable building lot because the layout of the parcel may determine how the house plans are configured.

Donations for this home are already being accepted. A millwork company has offered to provide all of the windows as called for in the new design. We have a commitment from County Materials to furnish the 25 yards of concrete for the foundation.  There may be grant money to help pay for some of the framing lumber.

The loss of the generous benefactor who funded our high school building partnership means that we must work harder to acquire the dollars and the materials to continue our mission, but we must keep building more homes. There are so many families in our area depending on us!

HFH Completes its Second Home of 2010

Habitat for Humanity volunteers have been busy working to finish their second home of the summer of 2010. In July we completed and Dedicated a home located at 1631 Becher Drive in Wausau. That family has now moved into their new home and is busy getting the grass to grow and enjoying their new surroundings. The Dedication Ceremony was held on July 25, was attended by over 40 people who wished the family well as they became a new homeowner in our community.

Our second Dedication will take place on Sunday, August 22nd at 7812 Volkman Street in Rothschild. This location is just south of the intersection of Weston Avenue and Volkman Street. The four bedroom home was approved for occupancy on August 12th by the Building Inspector and received its final cleaning on August 14th. It is now ready for our family.

Habitat partner families own their home and pay a mortgage held by the local HFH Affiliate. Like other homeowners they pay a monthly amount for principal payment which also includes an amount for escrowed taxes and insurance costs. Most HFH mortgages are 20-25 years in length.

Habitat partner families also must contribute 300 hours of "sweat equity". Of that amount 150 hours must be directly involved in the construction of their house. Our Volkman partner family has met that requirement. They worked alongside our regular volunteers and put in additional time developing their lot.

On August 22nd we invite you to join us for the short Dedication Ceremony and an "Open House". After the program the family will set-up some refreshments for everyone. The home will be open for inspection beginning at 12:30 PM that day. Habitat for Humanity invites the community to join us as we celebrate another family becoming a homeowner.

Our work-day attention is now focused on our house at 4906 Ross Avenue. Recently we erected the garage and will be putting on the roof, front porch, and finishing the interior during the next month.

One big upcoming activity will be the landscaping of the lawn. We always look for lots of help with this process and it has become a favorite activity of some of our volunteers. Our plans are to do this activity in early September. If you are interested in participating please let DuWayne Kleinschmidt know at 675-2587. The job goes quite quickly if enough people help.

If you are interested in volunteering please contact us through our website or call and leave at message at our office at 848-5042.

Thank you for your support of Habitat for Humanity.

Sincerely,

Berland Meyer

Two HFH Homes Nearing Dedication Dates

HFH volunteers have been busy this past month working on the last two of our 2009 projects. The houses located at 2202 Oregon Trail in Kronenwetter and 627 Ridgeland Avenue in Schofield are nearly complete. Given the current cold and snowy weather we are happy we finished all the exterior work during the warmer days of October and early November.

The Oregon Trail home is having the sheet rock on the lower level finished and painted by Custom Painting and Drywall. All the walls are in place and the building inspector has approved our work to this point.

We expect to have our volunteers back on-site at this location in about 10 days to begin the finish carpentry work of hanging doors and installing mouldings. The carpeting has been ordered and the donated floor tile from Wausau Tile goes in next week by Rich Konkol of Konkol Tile.

The HFH Board has identified Sunday, January 10, 2010, as the Dedication date. Our program will begin at 1:00 PM that day and will last about 45 minutes. It is open to all of HFH's friends so please stop by to see the finished home and celebrate with the family.

Our Ridgeland Avenue home is just about ready for sheet rock in the lower level. Currently Home Heating and RTL Electric are finishing their work. HFH volunteers are building the last of the soffits over the ductwork and are installing insulation on the outer walls. Once that is complete we are ready for our insulation inspection and then sheet rocking begins.

We hope to finish this home in early January and have set a tentative Dedication Date for Sunday, January 24, 2010. Our goal is to have both families in their new homes by the end of January. What a nice way for them to begin the new year!

High School Build Programs Making Progress

Our 2010 High School Builds are making great progress on next year's homes. The work on our houses - one 4-bedroom model and two 3-bedrooms - is moving along well. All projects are enclosed from the weather so work can continue all winter long.

Below is a photo of the DC Everest project. HFH appreciates the work of instructors Chad Pernsteiner, Greg Cisewski, and Ron Klinner and their students. They each build great homes for HFH and our families.

DC Everest High School House:

Habitat for Humanity asks for your help this holiday season!

HFH can only continue to build with our high school partners if we receive enough support from the Marathon County Community. The HFH Board of Directors made a commitment to our high schools to support their building programs for 2009-10. We continue to struggle to raise the funds to support that commitment. During this economy it has become more difficult to secure the corporate support we've enjoyed in the past. Thus our efforts to raise funds has become more critical if these programs are to continue for the future.

As Christmas approaches won't you consider making a gift to Habitat for Humanity? $5, $10, $100 goes a long way if enough people care about and support our community mission to help those less fortunate than ourselves.

Your donation can be sent to HFH, PO Box 1382, Wausau, WI 54402.

Thank you for your support of Habitat for Humanity.

Sincerely,

Alice Whitmore
Key Volunteer!

Alice Whitmore is a "can do" type of person. She enjoys challenges and sees them as opportunities for personal growth and growth for the organizations to which she belongs. What a blessed day for Habitat for Humanity when she decided to become a HFH Board of Directors member!

Alice is leaving our Board after serving the maximum of two three-year terms with us. During that time she has headed up our Public Relations Committee and has been the dynamic force behind our Mardi Gras Dinner celebration and Fund Raiser.

You see Alice's work every time you pick up the paper and read about us or when you attend an event and see the local news media. It is because Alice has been working behind the scenes. And, if you ever attended our "Fat Tuesday" Mari Gras event, you have Alice to thank for organizing that evening fund-raiser.

Not one to shirk her duty to our core mission, she appears on our work site and hammers nails with the best of our volunteers. She especially enjoys the work days when we are installing the lawns. "Landscaping and dirt are in my blood," said Alice after working a full day at our Oregon Trail site recently.

Our HFH Board has many strong individuals serving our community. If you are interested in serving on our Board or being a part of one of our many committees please call our office at 848-5042. We'll find a job for you that matches your skills and interests.

Alice found that out several years ago when she stepped forward to volunteer. "Being a part of the HFH Board has brought a smile to my face and to my heart! I encourage others to find that joy as well".

Alice is but one of scores of people who support Habitat for Humanity in Wausau. Thank you Alice for the work you have done for Habitat for Humanity.

DECONSTRUCTION ITEMS FOR SALE

Habitat has been collecting items from the houses being razed across the street from UWMC in Wausau. Items are now in our De-Construction warehouse on Sherman Street.

There you will find many wonderful items that we've saved from the wrecking ball. Items that still have a useful life; items that represent an era of hardwood floors and beautiful chandeliers. Many are items your never see at your local contractor outlet store. THese are one-of-a-kind items.

Remember that we have many salvaged doors, windows, trim and so forth in our warehouse. They would make a wonderful holiday gift to someone remodeling a house.

We encourage you to take a look at these useful items. Please call Karla at 715-212-1270 to make an appointment to visit the warehouse.
